I Love these books. I am going to be backpacking through Wyoming when the last one comes out, but you can be rest assured I know what I'm doing as soon as I get back.

And FINALLY, a female protagonist that isn't whiny, weak, stupid, and doesn't make stupid decisions because of goo-goo-eyed love.

I picked up the Time Traveler's Wife and couldn't put it down. It didn't feel like 500 pages. I loved it, but I can't recommend it to anyone people it was so racy in description and the language was deplorable. So sad that it was such an amazing concept but I can't exactly shout its praises.

And yet another dissenter... I actually plowed through it the other day. Once I got over the name Ford Deep Waters, I ended up really liking the book. I would like her to write one book without using the word chagrin, but it was a good read otherwise. I may even like it more than Twilight- more passionate and less teenage lust.

Pillars of the Earth is certainly not for anyone who faints at impropriety, but it's not erotic or pornographic either. It describes some harsh realities of the day - that women were chattel, that men with power took what they pleased mostly unchecked, and that because of these things, good people suffered terribly.

I contrast that starkly with a "story in a bubble," where evil is always stopped at the opportune moment, the heroine's greatest conflict is unrequited love, and sex is alluded to (but not to worry, never described.)

The Bible has sex and violence in spades, as well as a description of their consequences - good and bad. I am not by no means elevating Pillars to scripture, but simply making a point many have made before me: the worst kind of literature is that which detaches us from reality.

People make choices. Bad things happen. Good people suffer. In my experience, people (or literature) that pretend these things don't exist miss a big part of the human experience.

I fear that in well meant efforts to remain "pure" we too might miss out on compassion, wisdom and a drive to stand up to the kinds of issues Pillars takes on, issues that are still with us, even if we've done a better job of sweeping them under the rug.

I just hopped over to Goodreads to read some reviews of Pillars of the Earth, to see if they would get me back on track with reading it. Needless to say, there were a lot of glowing reviews, but the comments made by the readers who didn't like it..."filled with profanity and violent sex..." (repeated over and over by many readers, many of whom also apparently did find the book tedious, as well)...if this is the "standard" for medieval novels, then no wonder I haven't bonded with it, and it's highly unlikely that I will. Our tastes are very different, indeed. (As I keep telling the well-meaning person who gave me a copy and keeps insisting that "I'll love it".)

But again, as I said, if we all liked the same things, it'd be a pretty boring world. That's what keeps life interesting. :-)
